Concept
The area immediately outside Waterloo Station, one of the busiest in Europe, should lead people easily into the surrounding areas and onwards to other destinations. Instead passage for commuters and residents is discouraged by wide streets full of traffic at ground level or a dingy basement route
to the South Bank via the Imax Cinema.

We propose closing the subway and creating surface crossings across narrowed roads. Instead of a sea of tarmac between the Imax and its surroundings there will be a generous public space around the cinema with a prominent ground level entrance. This forms the hub of the scheme.

Immediately to the south is a new bus station on Tenison Way; a much more generous arrangement than the few existing bus stops on a narrow
spit of land.

Extending across the site, Waterloo Road
and Waterloo Bridge are realigned to create a continuous, coherent route with activated
shopfronts and coordinated bus stops along
its length. This is a key axis of the scheme

Five ‘pocket’ parks at the periphery of the site connect to the surroundings. These include Emma Cons Gardens to the south, a new square at Doon Street to the north and a new piazza in front
of the Station.

These proposals represent an exciting vision for
a pivotal part of London currently overwhelmed
by road traffic.

Practice Profile
Lifschutz Davidson Sandilands has been in existence for 22 years and has
carried out a wide variety of award winning projects for commercial and public sector clients and for charities.

The practice has approximately a half of its work in the commercial office and residential sectors with the remainder in many other types of commission including hotels, shops, restaurants, sports and community buildings, the education sector, bridges, industrial design and temporary structures.

Most of our work comes from repeat commissions; we have achieved a strong client base with organisations that value our design capabilities and work ethic. Lifschutz Davidson Sandilands has won numerous national and international design awards and we are proudest of recognition from expert user groups.

We try to understand the economic, social and environmental drivers in all of our projects to ensure they are sustainable in the long term. Our experience of working on London’s South Bank over the last 20 years shows that the most successful development is that supported by grass roots or local economic activity.
